The EU tariff locks in on October 30. So every importer is now sitting on the same question: do you commit to Chinese EVs now, or wait for the dust to settle?
Side A - bet now. The window is open. Prices are sharp, allocation is available, and the brands serious about your market are signing partners today. First movers lock hub-stock terms and local exclusivity before the crowd arrives. Waiting means paying more for less choice in 2027.
Side B - wait it out. The tariff is not the last word; Brazil's 35% and a shifting election, plus possible PHEV extensions in Europe, mean the rulebook is still moving. A deal signed today could look expensive next quarter if a duty carve-out or a local-plant exemption reshapes the lane. Patience protects margin.
Both sides are half-right, and both are half a trap.
My stand: the wait is a myth for serious importers. The dust never fully settles - trade policy is a moving target every quarter. What separates a winning bet from a losing one is not timing, it is which brand you back. Bet on the brands pouring concrete in your region (BYD Hungary, SAIC Spain, Chery's pipeline) and on those with a local service chain. Their supply is tariff-proof and their commitment is real. A pure importer with no local footprint is the one to wait on - because their margin may not survive the next rule change.
For an importer, the practical read: do not ask "now or later?" Ask "which brand, with what local footprint?" Back the localizers now; pause on the tourists.
Are you betting on the brand behind the wall, or just betting on the calendar?
